Conclave Chronicle - April 26, 2025

On Saturday, April 26, 2025, the cardinals gathered in Rome observed a pause in their preparatory work for the conclave, due to Pope Francis's funeral taking place that day. No general congregation or formal meeting was held.

Funeral of Pope Francis

The funeral mass for Pope Francis was held in St. Peter's Square, presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals. Approximately 400,000 faithful, as well as numerous heads of state and dignitaries from around the world, attended the ceremony. Pope Francis was buried privately in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, in accordance with his wish expressed in his spiritual testament. He thus becomes the first pope in over a century not to be buried in St. Peter's Basilica. Beginning of the Novemdiales

With the funeral, the Church began the period of Novemdiales, the nine days of mourning and prayer following the death of a pope. During this period, the cardinals participate in daily masses in memory of the deceased pontiff and continue their spiritual reflections in preparation for the election of the new pope.

Next Steps

The general congregations will resume on Monday, April 28, during which the cardinals will continue their discussions on the current challenges facing the Church and the qualities required for the future sovereign pontiff. The date of the conclave has been set for May 7, 2025. (May 7 papal conclave date finalized as cardinals prepare for election)
