On Thursday, April 24, 2025, the cardinals gathered at the Vatican for the third general congregation in preparation for the conclave scheduled for May 7. This session was marked by in-depth discussions about the current challenges facing the Church and spiritual preparation for the election of the new pope.
Meditation and Prayer
The session began with a spiritual meditation led by Dom Donato Ogliari, Abbott of St. Paul-Outside-the-Walls. He urged the cardinals to seek a humble pastor faithful to the Gospel, capable of guiding the Church in a spirit of service and trust in God.
Cardinals' Interventions
During this congregation, 34 cardinals spoke to share their reflections on the current needs of the Church and the desired qualities for the future pontiff. Discussions covered various topics, including Church governance, pastoral challenges, evangelization, interreligious relations, and the need to continue addressing sexual abuse within the Church.
Appointment of the Conclave Preachers
The cardinals appointed two preachers to provide spiritual accompaniment during the conclave: Dom Donato Ogliari and Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa, Preacher of the Pontifical Household. Their meditations aim to help electors discern with wisdom and prayer the choice of the next pope. (Conclave del 2025)
